Iowa Solon Johnson County Traffic Accident 1 Death Dr. Usha Mallik

SOLON, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) — A University of Iowa spokesperson confirmed Monday that Dr. Usha Mallik, Ph.D., a Professor Emeritus at the university, was killed in a multi-car crash in Johnson County on Sunday. Four others were injured.

According to Iowa State Patrol, the fatal accident occurred when Thomas Perkins, driving west on 140th Street near Solon, ran a stop sign around 5:30 pm. Perkins collided with a towed camper traveling northbound on Highway 1, crashing into the driver’s side of Dr. Mallik’s car.

Dr. Mallik, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perkins sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment. Three other individuals, including a 1-year-old, were taken to the hospital for their injuries. Another vehicle, traveling southbound, was hit by debris from the camper, but the driver was uninjured.
